The City Cricket Academy is celebrating after Sonia Odedra was named in the England women’s squad to face India in a one-off Test match this week.

The seam bowler, who plays her county cricket across the border with NottinghamSonia+Odedra+

shire, is operations manager at the Academy on Freeman’s Common, where she also coaches.

The game against the touring side is at the beautiful Wormsley ground in Buckinghamshire and starts on Wednesday.

Odedra, who is 26, joined forces with the CCA five years ago and has made excellentprogress in that time leading to her call into the England side. “This is the first time someone has made it to the top from our academy,” said delighted CCA director Don Bhagawati. “She started five years back and I predicted that she would play for England then.

“She was the first girl to play Premier League cricket in the Everards League as well. She is a role model for the community as well. Lots of youngsters look up to her and there are already a few girls who want to follow her footsteps.

“Sonia has worked hard and somewhere down the line we have helped a little.”

Odedra has already demonstrated her capabilities to the Indians. Last week she took 3-28 from 15 overs for the England Academy at Loughborough in a two-day game against the tourists.

Odedra has featured in the Premier League for Hinckley once this summer taking 2-32. “She has been playing county cricket otherwise she would feature regularly in our first team at Hinckley on merit,” added Bhagawati.
